At Leeds you will enjoy rigorous intellectual debate and you will not be afraid to unleash your naturally competitive spirit. And you will be among the students who compete each year at a variety of local, regional, national and international competitions. It is this strong participation and eagerness to share ideas that enhances the Leeds Community.
The Leeds School of Business supports and sponsors several case competitions that provide students with opportunities to complement their classroom experience, showcase their skills, and compete with fellow MBA students throughout the nation.
Leeds School of Business/Net Impact Case Competition
Since 2002, Leeds has hosted the national Net Impact Case Competition, a collaborative competition that brings together MBAs from different schools to work together in teams to address a business sustainability or social responsibility issue. Past cases have included Nike and the Burma Pipeline. Learn more about the competition.
Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC)
The VCIC is the nations's premiere strategy competition for venture-minded and entrepreneurial MBA students. This one-of-a-kind competition gives students from top business schools real-world venture capitalist experience. Student teams interact with real entrepreneurs from real companies with real business plans. The VCIC experience exposes students to a variety of activities that ultimately must be integrated into a cohesive investment strategy to be pitched to real venture capitalists.
Business Plan Competition
The Business Plan Competition is the culmination of the Business Plan Preparation course in the Fall semester. Student teams present their business plan to a panel of judges, who evaluate the viability of the business venture. Students are required to answer tough questions about the nature of their business. The winners receive cash awards and recognition from the Leeds School of Business.
The Urban Land Institute Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition
The ULI competition is open to graduate students in real-estate related areas of study at universities throughout North America. Each competing team has to produce development plans for selected sites, and, during the competition, present its final plan to the competition judges during a public forum. First prize carries a cash purse of $50,000.
Big XII Case Competition
Universities in the Big XII athletic conference have created a conference-wide case competition for teams of MBA students. The top two teams from the northern division and southern division universities advance to a "Final Four" competition to take place during and at the site of the Big XII Basketball Tournament each year.
Rocky Mountain Real Estate Challenge
The Leeds School of Business MBA team trumped the
team from the University of Denver (DU) at the first annual Rocky Mountain Real Estate Challenge held in May 2006. The competition enabled students to present real estate proposals for converting the 50-acre portion of the Gates Corporation facility into a mixed-use, transit-oriented urban village. Future competitions may be national in scope.
I chose Leeds because of the interest in and activity around sustainability issues I saw in both the student and the broader Boulder communities. I was initially introduced to this aspect of the program through the Leeds Net Impact Case Competition, which convinced me that Leeds was the place for me. The Leeds MBA community has a special character of collaboration and exploration that extends beyond the students.
