MBA Organizations
Whether you are interested in working for a Fortune 500 company or small start-up venture, employers seek leadership potential to ensure a strong pool of talent to guide the company's future. While the coursework and classroom interactions provide the important skills and knowledge to help you succeed in your career, student organizations and activities offer leadership opportunities that can help shape your future role as a business manager and leader.
MBA Association (MBAA)
The MBAA is a student-run organization. Committees plan programs that foster student interaction with regional and national business leaders and enhance the MBA program experience.
National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA)
The National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) organization was founded in 1979 at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Today, NAWMBA is a national organization with chapters at MBA programs across the country. At the Leeds School of Business, NAWMBA provides access to female role models and networking events within the Colorado business community. NAWMBA hosts speakers, organizes panels, and creates opportunities for involvement with local business such as the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs.
Graduate Entrepreneurship Association (GEA)
The GEA, sponsored by the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, is open to all Boulder MBA students interested in starting their own businesses or in developing the entrepreneurial spirit of creative innovation within larger, more traditional corporate environments. Activities sponsored by the GEA include the University of Colorado at Boulder Entrepreneur of the Year (past winners include CEOs Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com and Bill Coleman of BEA Systems) and the Business Plan Competition.
Student Advisory Council (SAC)
The Student Advisory Council (SAC) acts as the liaison between the Leeds School of Business and its MBA students. The SAC and the assistant dean for MBA programs meet once each month to jointly develop plans to improve students' academic and co-curricular experiences in the MBA program.
Leeds Net Impact
The Leeds Net Impact student chapter is an affiliate of the national organization, Net Impact, which is committed to using the power of business to improve the world. The unique focus of the chapter at Leeds is in creating innovative market driven solutions to sustainability issues. In partnership with the other Leeds Centers of Excellence, the University of Colorado, and the local business community, the cahpter leverages opportunities to integrate sustainability into traditional business disciplines.
During my career at a major trading company, I have also come to see the limitations of a large company. A major company usually prefers to do business with higher net profit rather than a higher percentage of profitability. In other words, a major company will opt for a business of $100 million with 1% profit rather than a business of $10,000 with 20% profit. This observation suggests that there are opportunities for a very small company with a niche business of higher profitability.
This idea, together with my experience as a log trader, has led me to the goal of establishing a trading company to import finished niche goods from different countries to end users. I have acquired extensive experience in the area of international trade, but I still need to gain the knowledge of new marketing tools and finance that an MBA from Leeds School of Business will provide. An MBA from the Leeds School of Business is crucial to helping me build a road out of the lumber business and into the world of international entrepreneurship.
